Desktop Shortcut Bug

June 2007

Further information regarding the Desktop Shortcut bug/problem has come to light.

Apparently when installing an .MSI based application such as ArborCAD, the original .MSI file needs to be retained on the computer in the place where the program was installed. The reason for this is that Windows needs to have it available in case the installed application requires a Repair. Currently, the .MSI is downloaded in a Zip file and then opened and launched by WinZip. WinZip then discards the original .MSI file and thus makes it unavailable for later detection causing the break in connectivity between Desktop Icon and the application.
The solution is to extract the files from within WinZip to your hard drive and then to run them from here (rather than allow WinZip to run the Setup file directly).

There appears to be a 'bug' with the desktop shortcut. For some reason, after a while, it changes its target link to point to the setup program rather than to the installed application program (this happens after a certain chain of events are performed whilst using Arborcad). This may happen when you come to use ArborCAD after restarting your PC.
If the setup program has since been removed, this can generate a number of error boxes because it can no longer locate it. I have as yet not determined why this is happening and have tried to solve the problem.
So if, after clicking on the ArborCAD desktop icon you generate a box similar to one (or all) of the following, then the link has broken.

If it happens to you, you can solve it permanently by manually creating a new desktop shortcut.

To do this, go to your 'My Computer' desktop icon and then locate the ArborCAD.exe or Arborcad AE.exe file within the Arborcad or ArborCAD AE folder which will probably be within your Program Files folder on drive C: (Note: the file may be simply called 'Arborcad' without the '.exe' text depending upon whether or not you are showing file terminaters). Now, right click the mouse and select Create Shortcut.

A shortcut will appear in the open folder. Now click on the shortcut with the mouse and with the left button held down move the shortcut onto any part of your desktop which is visible.

You may be prompted whether you wish to overwrite the existing short cut which you do.
